Jumpers for Goalposts September – Hhymn and George Michael

27 Sep

Sorry to be tardy with the update but we’ve just got the photos back from the Chemist and some of them didn’t come out, in fact, apart from a load of pictures of the Jumpers organisers and a LOAD of pictures of our very own George Michael, you may need to use your imagination.

Jumpers in September was excellent!

A few weeks ago, we toyed with doing a competition where we cut out a load of heads of these two gentlemen:

and the competition would have been to have made a model of what they DEFINITELY DID NOT DO in a twin hotel room. We had to abandon that one because the news story died.

George Michel going to JAIL  was still fresh so we set the competiiton to show how you would free George from prison, with  a note asking everyone to ‘be gentle’.

As ever the standard was really high but, as ever the winners were a mixture of Hard Crafters and people who happened upon the night.

This lady was particularly delighted to win a prize!

When I asked her partner what it was all about however, it was clear that he hadn’t read the part about being gentle.  That diorama is about what you think it’s about.

Our friend Jim, who gave us the funniest image of 2009, stepped up and disguised himself perfectly as George Michael

Just to be clear, that picture is not the real George Michael or even a perfect waxwork representation and the photo has not been altered in any way, just an amazing transformation.

Unfortunately, the chemist lost our pictures of the winning entry, which was pretty much a whole prison, a George and elaborate escape equipment which was won by this team of recurrant winners who always submit amazing entries and give equally amazing explainations:

Our musical guests  were Nottingham supergroup Hhymn, who pretty much amazed the room with their super-tight musicianship and Ed’s amazing vocals.  My favourite fans were the group of Eastern Europeans who came in during the set swigging from hip flasks and buying 4 CDs from the band (The band Cleaned Up on CD sales!).  I got scared doing the sound for a full(ish) band but it would have been impossible to make those guys sound bad (well, we could have left that mic feeding back making a hideous howl but you get what I mean).

Again, there are loads of handsome and beautiful pictures of Hhymn on the Chemist owner’s wall

We also had our good friends Hot Horizons DJing

By Christmas they’ll be famous rock stars and people will think we’re lying about them DJing at jumpers!

It was a lovely night again and possibly the calm before the storm as next month looks to be a biggie as town doubles in population with the return of the Students. So you may need to get there early to see the lovely Cecile Grey and join in with another Jumpers Challenge.

Until then,  I’ll leave you one of about a hundred pictures of the Jumpers team that the chemist didn’t steal, with our good friend GeorgeMichel

L-R Joey, Holly, Becky, Anders, Nick and Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.

Until Next month…

Craft Hard….But Fair!

Thursday 16th September 2010
The Alley Café
Starts 8.30 but there is no law against grabbing some tasty vegetarian dinner before hand!
Admission Price: You’re ALL on our guestlist!

After last months’ triumphant night of joining a global Giraffe making project and listening to some excellent music care of Nick Jonah Davis, JUMPERS FOR GOALPOSTS returns on Thursday 16th September for another night of Craft, Live Music, expertly selected recorded music and chilled out surroundings.

This month we have live music from Nottingham Supergroup HHYMN, a team-up of Titans from the Nottingham acoustic scene who will chill you out and feed your minds as you complete our secret CRAFT COMPETITION.

For the Craft Competition, we provide the Challenge and the Craft Materials and you provide the ideas, creations, and glares when other teams win the prizes that should have been yours!

By Prizes, we mean MEGA PRIZES™ (may contain traces of ebay ‘treasure’).

Our Special GUEST DJs this month will be long-time friends of the Jumpers Family, Hot Horizons who will be in town for one night only!

We have realised over the months that some people who are out on dates at the Alley Café have stumbled on Jumpers for Goalposts and learned all they will ever need to know about each other by working together on a craft project.  So if you are thinking of asking someone out on a date and have chickened out, set yourself a limit and engineer the for 16th September (that means ask them THIS WEEKEND!), get there early, grab a table for two and wait for the conversation topics to come to you!

Imagine a date where neither of you have to pretend to care about what the other person does at work!

See you there!

Giraffe Night Down at jumpers for Goalposts

21 Aug

This month’s Jumpers for Goalposts RULED!

We set the Craft Competition to coincide with this guy’s attempt to collect  ONE MILLION pictures of Giraffes http://www.onemilliongiraffes.com/

Nick Jonah Davis, who also plays in The Escapologist played some beautiful acoustic guitar pieces, one of which was partly inspired by the unusual gait of the giraffe and partly by an African tribe who hunt giraffes to eat their livers because they contain psychadelic properties where the halucination is typically of hunting giraffes and eating their livers, which could be confusing.

Crafters pondered:

Crafters crafted

Joey compered with a Giraffe puppet

And after Nick Judged the competition,

we gave prizes, including a couple of completely fairly allocated prizes including some  to management representatives and friends of the artiste de jour:

The crsftes above explained thet their entry was ‘Fragile…like love’

Well, we noticed something we hadn’t spotted before about jumpers for goalposts, that a few people on dates had stumbled upon the night expecting to get to know each other over an awkward drink, thinking of questions that would reveal if it was true romance or not.  In actual fact a craft challenge is all you need to find out everything you’ll ever need to know a person and the first thing you’ll find out is that they have a medium sized to extra large heart for going along with the challenge in the first place.  Becky overheard the remark ‘I think it will be quicker if you do it yourself rather than try to explain to me what you mean!’.  For some , that’s the frankness you’ve been looking for all your life! So if you’ve got a date lined uporif you are asked by a friend about where to go on a date, we suggest Jumpers for goalposts.

While Nick was playing, it was a perfect soundtrack to watch people sitting around crafting and I realised what a lovely thing Jumpers for goalposts is. People really chilling out while using creative skills most of us stoppedusing when we were 8 and getting to hear some excellent musicians in a cool setting.

Here are some more Giraffes

Someone is VERY serious about their giraffes:

Thursday 19th August
From 8.30pm (but you can eat / drink / chill in the Alley Cafe from as early as you like)

The Great Jumpers For Goalposts Giraffeting Competition, with Live Music From Nick Jonah Davis

Every month at Jumpers for Goalposts we hold a crafting competition where we provide a craft-buffet of paper, pens, googly eyes and all manner of brightly coloured materials aimed at appealing to 3-7 year olds.
The competition is often very fierce and we use an independent judge (the performer of the night) so that when someone makes a costume, Tony Sourgrapes can’t come up to us with his pointy aggressive body language saying ‘you said in the instructions to make a ‘thing’ dressing up isn’t a ‘thing’! [really happened].
This month we craft local……..
                                                                                           ……..…but think Global!

We’re sticking our ‘necks’ out and joining in with http://www.onemilliongiraffes.com/ to help them collect ONE MILLION pictures of giraffes.  Who knows why? They hardly seem to, but they’re going to need a LOT of blu-tac!
They have about 150 days left to do it and as long as 65,000 people come to Jumpers for Goalposts – They’ll be able to kick back and relax with it in the bag!
So, come along, bring any CHEATING supplies you like, orange wool, yellow material, natural growing bamboo canes, as long as it doesn’t originate from an actual living giraffe it’s all good!
As ever, there will be MEGA PRIZES ™ for the best ‘Giraffeters’ and you’ll get to join the hall of fame on this gradually emerging blog, as well as having all your entries submitted to the One Million Giraffes website.

That’s NOT ALL! We’ll also have LIVE IN CONCERT Music from Nick Jonah Davis who you may know from  synth-toting legends ‘Escapologists’ and his solo electronic project Stone 3.  Nick has recently produced his first solo acoustic album and we’re excited to hear what he’s come up with.

International Giraffe-making competition, Great Live Music, Lovely dinner and drinks in a nice cafe.

See you there,

Help us make One Million Giraffes

Can you make this out of googly eyes and egg boxes?

Pirate-y parrot from Jumpers for Goalposts

This pirate-y little fella was created at Jumpers for Goalposts.

And the winners were…

16 Jul
Dear Diary,

Last night was another vintage Jumpers For Goalposts.  Jake Bugg was awesome, but I’ll let Joey tell you about him. Me and Nick played tunes and were very definitely the most professional DJs to grace those decks, EVER. I only played 2 songs at the wrong speed and we only had 2 bigs gaps where music should’ve been. Brilliant.  We did play some great tunes though… a bit of Prince, Nilsson, MSTRKRFT, Nina Simone, Dexy’s, LCD Sound System and more.

The craft was pretty strong too. The bug/celeb competition proved popular and giving the rules out in advance definitely meant that people came prepared with puns and sketches. So, without further ado….. (imagine a drum roll, diary…..) HERE ARE THE WINNERS!

Prize winner "talking through his entry"

Scott demonstrates "The Crane" from Karate Kid

Broze prize winner at Jumpers for Goalposts

Congratulations to Scott on his "Ralph Macchiantis" scooping 3rd place

Bronze prize-winner Scott made a praying mantis inspired by Ralph Macchio’s often-imitated, never-bettered “Crane” move in the Karate Kid movie from the 80’s. This craft creation earned him 3rd place and a bug-inspired prize – a biography of ANTony Kiedis (see what we did there??) with a picture of an ANT stuck on it.

Proud to be taking 2nd place prize at Jumpers for Goalposts

Well done on the quality of the entry which was Ladybug Marilyn Manson

The second prize was definitely awarded on the quality of the craft, not the pun, as Ladybug Marilyn Manson doesn’t really count as a pun at all. Luckily the artist’s skill & vision carried this entry right through to second place earning her a wonderful Incy Wincy Spider book (don’t let Joey explain it to you… he’s always giving away spoilers) and a wiggly bug thing which, according to Holly, “smells nice”. Awesome.

The creators of "Big Daddy Long Legs" take a bow

Abi & Dan romped home in first place with "Big Daddy Long Legs"

Looking good Joey! Abi & Dan were unanimously voted GOLD MEDAL WINNERS for their wonderful “Big Daddy Long Legs” entry. It was well-conceived, had a good pun and was beautifully executed. Look at the pride on their faces. That’s what Jumpers for Goalposts can do for you. Plus, as winners of the first place and gold prize they got wine. An actual good prize. None of your Incy Wincy rubbish for them!

So, diary, I think you can see a good night was had by all. Here’s a quick picture of Jake for you before I say goodbye:

Jake Bugg playing live at Jumpers for Goalposts

Hello Thor hosts Jumpers for Goalposts on the 3rd Thurs of every month. Jake Bugg played live this July.

In Anticipation…

12 Jul

In anticipation of all the wonderful bug-related stuff people will make on Thursday here is a classic entry from Jumpers past in The Gallery:

Craft competition entry at Jumpers for Goalposts

Leggy Eye Man was DEFINITELY a winner!

6 Jul

Dear Diary,

It’s only 9 days until the next Jumpers for Goalposts! I love it when I’m counting down to something special and I get into single figures. Especially when that something special involves crafting, the company of friends and soon-to-be friends and sweet melodies! Can’t wait to see our act for the night play. His name is Jake Bugg. He plays folky material that kind of reminds me a little of Iron & Wine, except he’s only 16, has no beard and is from Clifton, Nottingham. Can’t wait to see him. Wish I was that talented when I was 16! I was probably sitting in my room being mardy and writing terrible poetry about boys and wondering what it means when they say ‘hello’.  In fact, I definitely was, and you know all about those dark days Diary.

I’m also really looking forward to seeing who will be in this months Jumpers gallery. There’s always heaps of weird and wonderful creations crafted on the night, it’s such a shame they can’t all win mega-prizes, but that’s the fun of it too! Who will be deserving of a mega-prize this month? I wonder. I hope lots of new faces come down to join in the fun!

Love Holly
