Where normally we have a talented, magical musical act… this month we had… the audience. So, instead of people coming and making craft while hearing a great acoustic set from a band, we asked people to come and make craft whilst learning to play the Dr Who theme tune on one of a range of tiny instruments.

We had no idea how this would turn out, whether anyone would even want to come and, if they did, whether they would ever join in. So… we waited nervously, on the 3rd Thursday of the month, for people to show up.

Slowly the room began to fill and slowly it became apparent that, not only were people joining in and having a go on our tiny instruments (that sounds wrong somehow!)…they had even brought their own.

So, with the magic of a keyboard, some glockenspiels, tiny guitars (ok, ukeleles), kazoos, a child’s accordion, a swanee whistle and the human voice, we created this impromptu, off-the-cuff live hallucination performance:

I’m sure you’ll agree it is breath-taking! Apologies for the shaky camera work. We were over excited.

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came down, took part, created craft, made music, or just stared at the people doing those things in a confused way. Our hearts were in our mouths, but thanks to you we pulled it off!

We’re back next month on the third Thursday (17th March) at the Alley Cafe, with the splendid 20 Year Hurricane taking over the musical reins.

We have some very special and exciting Christmas News!

Jumpers for goalposts is going away for Christmas to HUNTINGDON STREET!

On 16th December, we will be joining forces with the Tether Gallery on Huntingdon street for their last night of Tether party PLUS Jumpers for goalposts.

If you haven’t been, Tether is an amazing place. It has installation spaces, a bar and a cool DIY TV STUDIO complete with bleacher seats for the audience (who could be YOU). Tether closes on the 16th forever and while there will be various footage of the place, it’s a real chance to get a last look at the iconic set-up while wallowing in Christmas indulgences.

This is how the night will unfold:

At 6.00pm Tether will be hosting and filming their quiz show ‘Black Swans’ and you’re all welcome to take part in that.

After the Quiz show, Jumpers for Goalposts will be helping to host their party with LIVE CHRISTMAS SONGS from some secret hand-picked musicians

Lots of Christmas music played very late into the night (Thursday is the new Friday and we’ve heard that they may be keeping the place open until dawn)

A craft competition that we’re all excited about because the room that we’ll be judging it in is going to look surreally beautiful when we’ve all finished.

DR BADGE will be there where you can each draw on a circle of paper and he will turn that into a REAL BADGE!

So Remember, on 16th December, head on up to Tether at 17A Huntingdon Street (map on their website) for Jumpers for Goalposts VS The End of our Tether.

Burly wowed the assembled creative brains with a whirlwind trip through their Elvis-inspired album, recorded in February. Personal highlights for me were “Milkshakes at the Roller Rink” (50′s ish bubblegum pop), the scissors one where they snip the air in a very concentrated manner and the fabulous sing-a-long favourite “Burly Nagasaki” (woooaaooh).

HERE’S THE DEETS:
On the third Thursday of August 2009, a very special thing occurred. A band, created specially for Jumpers For Goalposts, performed live. Using a selection of household tools, a tiny keyboard, a mandolin and a megaphone, a legend was born, as two people led a singalong about a made-up superhero.

The band’s name? You’ve guessed it… Burly Nagasaki.

Since then Burly Nagasaki – a duo of Joey on guitar and vocals and Theresa on drums and vocals – has sprouted a pair of rhinestone-encrusted wings and taken flight. They’ve written and recorded an album about Elvis Presley, released on their own record label, S’only Music. They’ve also performed this selection of charming, beautifully-crafted songs everywhere from Dot To Dot to the Hockley Hustle.

This is your opportunity to see Burly Nagasaki return to their spiritual home; to find out anything you ever wanted to know about Elvis; and to get your craft on to a magical musical melange of rock n roll, indiepop, surf, art rock, electro…and maybe even to have a singalong about a made-up superhero.

There will also be a FREE creative competition with MEGA prizes, and DJ Cat Lady playing some blinding records.

It all kicks off at about 8.30pm, but feel free to get down early, bag a seat, and get some of the Alley Café’s lovely vegan tucker.

How’s tricks? Really, that good? I’m okay, yeah, thanks for asking. October’s Jumpers For Goalposts was a right laugh. There was a brand new glut of craft materials, thanks to Joey’s Mum. Thanks Joey’s Mum. Plus, we were in the company of four very nice folk who make music under the name Cecille Grey.

Some people complained that the competition was too hard. Others complained that the instructions were too long. True, they probably were. But they were rewarding too. Just like reading should be.

Anyway, for some reason that I forget, the competition was themed around the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. Basically he got taken, the kidnappers demanded millions of dollars, his mega rich family weren’t that keen to give up millions of dollars, the kidnappers sent them young John’s ear in a box, the mega rich family reluctantly paid up (after some bargaining).

Dan suggested that the competition for next month should be “to make a spider”, and that it should be themed around “making a spider”. Maybe it should be, yeah. This month’s wasn’t though. This month, Jumpers For Goalposts contestants were invited to delve into the craft buffet and to demonstrate, through the medium of craft, who they’d like to kidnap, and what they’d send in a box.

Fortunately these people seemed like reluctant kidnappers. Except maybe the shouty man in the corner, who wanted to kidnap the barman. A bit too close to home, shouty man.

The drummer drummed his wicked drum box thing; the bass player played flawlessly, despite being squeezed into an impossibly tiny corner; guitars chimed; some beautiful use of a melodica did some sterling work in banishing memories of the last time a melodica was (ab)used at Jumpers; laid back vocals wafted dreamily amongst the crafters.

And then Cecille Grey judged the competition entries.

There were some mega Halloween-inspired mega prizes. The couple that won Zombie by The Cranberries on vinyl must be made up. Not to mention the guy that won a book with a skeleton on the cover. Scott and Sue won 50 trillion dollars and a bottle of wine, and the title of WINNERS for demonstrating how they would have dismembered Jeremy Beadle, using plasticine and a paper plate. The sickos.

Remember, 3rd prize is still a prize!

Put together back in the heady days of Jul 2009. Lord knows what brief these crafters were fulfilling, but look at the wonder they’ve created. Beautiful. If you’d like to create something similarly bizarre/disturbing/blasphemous then join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month and get busy with the googly eyes and glue.

Thursday, 21^st October is JUMPERS FOR GOALPOSTS night at the Alley Café!

October is, of course, SHOCKTOBER, therefore our regular CRAFT COMPETITION will have a ghoulish edge to start the Halloween fun early. 

We will set you a Craft Challenge and we’ll provide all of the paper, glue, tape, googlie eyes etc and you can set the dark side of your imaginations to create something that could win you MEGA PRIZES™©®

To soothe the TERROR of tables of people creating masterpieces out of children’s craft supplies while eating, drinking and chatting, getting too much, we have the excellent Cecille Grey to calm your frantic nerves.  Cecille Grey are sometimes two people, sometimes many more but always beautifully calming folk-tinged songs.  Be nice to them as they will be judging the Craft Competition at the end of the night.

The fun starts about nine but it may be a big one this month, so arrive early go grab a table, in fact treat yourself to a veggie sausage sandwich for your Dinner and wash it down with a strawberry lassie before it all starts.
